The apartment I lived in last summer was in a block of rowhouses with the garbage pickup in a driveway behind. At first I tried carrying my garbage down the front stairs, but that meant I had to walk all the way around the block to get to the bins. So then I tried going out the only back entrance, which was a fire escape, but carrying trash bags down the narrow steps was a little tricky. Finally I realized the optimum solution was to throw the bags off the fire escape, then walk down and put them in the bins.
