I try really really hard to not buy into most hype, especially as it relates to video games. I'm much more inclined to want to be surprised than disappointed, and there aren't very many opportunities for that these days in my opinion, especially as it relates to big ticket games from big money developers.
So it comes with no preconceived confirmation bias, that I wish to inform you all that Hi-Fi Rush fucking rocks.
It's the best of Jet Set Radio meets the best of Devil May Cry, in every sense of both of those franchises. It's visually gorgeous, the music is pitch perfect, and the world feels incredibly well-built. My biggest complaint, honestly, is that the main character is an absolute clump of moss, but once you meet other characters in the world besides your own lead, everything starts coming together.
Probably the most straight up fun I've had with a video game in a good while.
