a really neat detail in battlefield is how tight the environmental collision is. ive played enough shooters over the years to kinda expect certain "invisible walls" to pop up in places; things like shooting through a tiny gap in a fence or having one too many intersecting objects in the way.
battlefield revels in subverting those expectations. many, many times ive been able to land sniper shots past gaps, cracks and nicking the side of a head. chances are if you think a bullet can fit, it probably can. one favourite example was in BF4, being stuck behind a car and unable to run away. the solution? shoot through the car windows. it worked! that's cool!
combine all this with (mostly BF4's) impressive destruction physics and in its best moments, BF is this chaos-fuelled, organic... well, battlefield that shines when tossing you in some giant space. here's a bunch of soldiers, here's two tanks, here's 20 completely modelled buildings you can enter, climb and blow up: figure it out. i do still think the writing and presentation is rubbish, not even close to the cinematic polish of a COD, but fair enough, i can see why this series took off.
