it's... what you'd expect having watched the films. same writing skewed for young kids, same eye-roll humour and overacting, all that jazz. the humans get an even bigger spotlight here which is rather annoying for a Knuckles joint. a movie i can turn my brain off for, a TV show's worth of this (and future projects) is a taller ask as an adult, like im not exactly engaged.

the show's building off what original writing was present and idk, still not jiving with the basic concept of them being... kids in an adopted family, it feels limiting. the angle's understandable, it makes them relatable for the younger demographic, it's just a bit of unnecessary worldbuilding that confines more interesting scripts. there's a context that has to be accounted for now: what are the humans doing? how do they fit in? what backstories and personalities need to be rewritten to fit this direction? combine that with the need to acknowledge the games and you get an unsatisfying balancing act.

the movieverse is pushing the humans hard, even as a sonic-obsessed child i'd be annoyed. im here for the little furry dudes man! not Wade.

i mean it's not terrible or anything. Idris Elba's still a killer Knuckles, Tails is in it for a tiny bit which is a five-star rating right there* and hey, more references! i know who Pachacamac is, you get me television production.

the Knuckles show is fine for what it is, so far. i'll watch it all but it's becoming clear this isn't a part of the sonic franchise for me and yknow? that's okay. Sonic X ran along similar lines and i didn't lose sleep over disliking that.

will update tomorrow after finishing.
