its amazing how an adaption can kinda shake how you perceive elements of the original. pokemon gender, for example, is a purely cosmetic stat that i never paid attention to, partly because you don't truly converse with pokemon without a third-party noun narrator (Pikachu liked that etc.). it's barely brought up.

however, the anime's not only concurrent with game mechanic development, but is also free to directly refer to pokemon in dialogue. this means that alot of these early films (up to the lucario one at least) use "it/it's" for all of them.

this isn't a bad thing of course, im just so used to the games tossing a sex symbol on the screen that seeing gender actually addressed during a time when it wasn't a standard is incredibly interesting. there's a noticeable dynamic between mediums here; changing a social aspect of one world entirely by dependence on the other and running with it.

pokemon's fun when it does this, especially for game-only-me. the rigidity of the series' structure is torn apart by necessity with film and you get to see an organic take on what were originally just stats on a card. gender's less of a thing? genderless it is! neat.
