well, i finished symphony of the night in three days (7 and a half hours gametime roughly) which is a testament to how addictive it is. what a sugar rush of a metroidvania, one of the originators no less. it's barely aged a day.

if i had to pick at anything, its that the difficulty falls apart very quickly once you've snagged an item and level or two. SOTN's "buffet" approach to upgrades gives so many options for fights that you eventually steamroll everything the game can throw at you, becoming a matter of how you want to win, not if. it's a different, more RPGish school of thought compared to the strictness of metroid's half of the formula and i won't lie, i prefer that style more.

not that it diminishes the player psychology of "Find The Things" a bit though. SOTN makes up for it with sheer fucking variety, every room has new enemies, backgrounds, music, hundreds of items and combos that all looks phenomenal. half my enjoyment came from just seeing what new stuff was around the corner, it's a classic horror pixel-art feast that constantly rewards player curiosity, there's no wrong direction.

and the BOSSES oh my god, easily the best part. they're not very challenging as said above but they all have excellent visual design and even managed to startle me occasionally, christ, running into Beelzebub the first time? a giant, rotting zombie corpse that takes up three screens? or Granfalloon's... all of it? i spent that fight just gawking at the bastard for a bit, it's ridiculous how many there are and how unique they feel.

loved it. loved the whole ride, even the inverted castle which is a shameless copy-paste environmental retread but i didn't care because stuff. i've definitely got a new series to try out.
