i wish monolith would make a FEAR 4. no, not a reboot, the fourth game. did you know the third ended with the birth of the anti-christ? are you telling me you DON'T want a John Woo action shooter set in the book of Revelations? that just prints money as far as im concerned.
speaking of FEAR, i'd also love to see if Monolith can top 2's ending, which is one of the most WTF finales ive ever seen in a game. i think the reason it isn't mentioned more often is simply due to fewer people playing the sequels.
so fun fact, FEAR 2 was developed during a publishing rights limbo with the series, meaning it wasn't entirely clear if the game would see the light of day. because of this, Warner Bros. (the eventual IP owners) got Day 1 Studios to start production on a separate FEAR 2 concurrently. however, the issue was sorted with Monolith being bought out by WB in time. this resulted in their FEAR 2 staying as FEAR 2 and Day 1's version being delayed and becoming FEAR 3.
my theory, which is complete speculation but still, is that Monolith believed FEAR was dead in their hands and decided to burn the series to the ground. how? FEAR 2's ending, which is so fucked, i have to add a CW.
CW: R*pe
FEAR 2 ends with your player character, a male soldier, getting strapped to a chair and being both mentally and physically r*ped by series antagonist Alma. this is all presented in first-person, rapidly shifting between a boss fight in your head and... well, the act itself. without going into too much detail, Alma's a powerful corporation experiment who was forced to birth telekinetic supersoldiers and, after breaking free in FEAR 1, comes after you as you were experimented on to become her perfect match.
this is where the anti-christ birth comes from. yeah, it's a choice.
now again, perhaps this was the plan from the beginning. FEAR 1 dealt in some heavy subject matter if you went after the text/audio logs (which nobody ever does), but i just can't help wondering if Monolith wanted to leave 2 in the wildest state possible, if only to see how Day 1 could possibly pick up the pieces. they sure tried, if you've played 3. you can almost see the major story changes from their original focus in real-time.
god these games are something. don't worry, don't pay attention to the writing, just run around slow-mo shooting it's better that way.
edit: sdlfkj yeah no im looking up old forum threads about FEAR 2 and almost all of them are people asking what the hell happened.
