bit of a funny dilemma with Marathon's attempt at alliances and morality. you regularly side with factions throughout the trilogy, yet there's almost no method of interaction with them beyond friendly fire and... well, this. limitations of the time; something Doom worked with but Marathon struggles to break in these instances.
fun fact: the first Marathon's level structure was going to be affected by how many humans you saved per stage. this was dropped hard, since the AI was so awful they ended up dead before you opened a door. it's still all over the game's design though, it even chastises you for letting too many die, just without the punishment.
