COD WW2's up next for the veteran run. previously i always thought of it as the most middle-of-the-road, average and unoriginal game in the series. i still think that. however, i have died 10 times in the first mission, so we might have something on our hands here.
im so glad WWII brought back OHKO moments, sure game, shotgunners 'round every corner with double your health. oooooohhhhh.
idk, WWII's deliberate throwback to early 2000s war shooters is still unoriginal as all hell. if you've played a medal of honour, you've seen everything this COD offers, just with a shiny coat of paint and a story buried in spielberg homage. there's a tank level, there's an infiltration level, there's a sniping level, it's all a theme-park version of events; cut half the budget and you might as well be playing Enemy Front, you poor bastard.
it doesn't strike me as an inspired direction, more a response to Infinite Warfare's terrible reception and COD's gradual push into sci-fi. you can almost feel the reverberation from some activision exec slamming the emergency button and, well, if general consensus is anything to go by, WWII's become a footnote regardless. the MW reboots would resign it to a cut branch in the series' desperate attempts to stay relevant.
veteran slightly improves moment-to-moment gameplay, in that you can't snore through it. WWII reintroduces the healthbar and medkits from the very first COD which peppers fights with a bit more strategy than the usual "wait for the jam to disappear" plan. it's refreshing, especially after BO3, but coupled with this is some seriously unbalanced damage variability. you can die instantly to every kind of weapon just, whenever, with no solution other than using your death as a psychic ability to spot them next time. it's no fun trying to figure out what killed you, nor realizing all the enemy soldiers can take half a clip more than your tiny bar.
BO3's robot cyborgs had a lower TTK. very, very odd choice for this game, COD in general honestly. something i've appreciated about the franchise is its relative dedication to brisk, immediately gratifying firefights. for the World War game to avert that is bizarre and not enjoyable, be it normal or max difficulty.
overall, still meh, still straight down the middle for this series. Battlefield 1 had more variety, had a much more interesting anthology structure and took a shot at WWI to boot. play that instead.
