(Apologies I can't figure out how to find the specific damn post I want to reply to, but I guess it's a general thing. Don't want people to feel I'm @'ing like a callout, just want to emphasise the creator's own feelings about the video and its faults.)
I do want to add in here that in the comments of the video is a response to critiques of this video that I really recommend reading, because there are definitely a number of serious issues with the video to which I think the most important bit:
Where this breaks down is in the ways I considered, or rather didn't consider, neurodivergence. I didn’t think about how the research I cited centres and reinforces neurotypical, non-disabled experiences; I wasn't careful enough to make it clear that people who don't have what would be considered typical linguistic levels, or don't have typical styles of communication, are still full humans who deserve to be treated with love, respect, and dignity; and I implicitly reinforced those problematic ideas and notions.
As they say in the critique: “Ideas have power, wield them with care”
The critique is here, linked in the video's description too: https://inappropriate-behavior.com/actually-koko-could-talk/
Would like to stress, I really enjoy Soup Emporium's videos from when YT managed to pin me down for his first video that's an anti-capitalist analysis of the Legion & NCR conflict in Fallout: New Vegas lol.
I’ll try and wield with more care moving forwards.
honestly, you're right - flippant phrasing on my side aside, I guess what I was going at is that without like, devaluing koko's intelligence, ultimately she, like most animals, just... lacked the faculties to process and meaningfully communicate in human language specifically, in the way that was presented at the time. a gorilla can communicate perfectly fine on their own terms, it's just also never going to happen among neurotypical-ish human lines; that's a whole new language that if we want to communicate with gorillas, we have to learn for ourselves and emulate in a way they can understand in turn.
nevertheless there's still a very distinct parallel to be made between We Taught A Gorilla Sign Language (that she doesn't, herself understand and only knows as a series of mostly-set responses to external prompts) and The AI That Talks At You Is Totally A Real Person In The Machine, Guys (despite just being an aggressive pattern seeking algorithm that likewise has no internal understanding of its own input and output)
she, like most animals, just... lacked the faculties to process and meaningfully communicate in human language specifically, in the way that was presented at the time. a gorilla can communicate perfectly fine on their own terms
exactly that yeah. and it's nw. i meant to respond as well to one of @cupsofjades posts mainly (cos that's closer to like the source of the video) but i navigating between shared posts w/ addons is... tricky
and what you're saying is also pinpoint correct. marketing basically.
