it's mostly the same as moving out of anywhere else. i am expecting roughly the same issues moving out of florida as i had moving out of california, as i had moving out of minnesota, as i had moving out of florida the first time. moving is easy, it's just a colossal pain in the ass.

EDIT: i just remembered that you're european and idk if that had bearing on this question but in case it did: US citizens and permanent residents can just go from wherever to wherever in the US and it's not even a thing. like the only overhead beyond "getting your shit there" is getting a new ID and new plates if you have a car. also in my case there's a chance that my car tint, which is legal in florida, might not be legal in massachusetts but there's only one way to find out: wait to see if i get pulled over for it.

I just looked up the tint thing because I was going to try and be helpful and holy fuck tint meters are like $100 minimum, that sucks. I guess you could try and see if a car shop has one? The important thing is that florida's minimums are different for different windows, but MA's is 35% across the board. Best of luck with the move! :eggbug-nervous:

you're fine while you have FL plates, but you are supposed to get your sticker "within 7 days" of registering your car. Technically you are supposed to register "as soon as you become a resident" but in practice, like, how are they gonna check this? The only way they'd know you're a resident is if when you transfer your driver's license, so like. it's gonna be one trip to the RMV anyway. I think I took like two months when I moved. Had stuff to do, and all.

If you fail inspection you'll get an "R" sticker and something like 60 days to rectify the problem. I think you can get extensions for that. Also I drove on an expired sticker for two years and nobody noticed. Don't... necessarily... recommend doing that.

OH, and make sure to schedule your Mass RMV appointment like. soon. They're not really walk-in anymore, a lot of them require you to schedule pretty far in advance. Don't wait on that part.

Also, if your car isn't a Subaru, consider making the switch. You wanna fit in around here, don'tcha?

great news! my florida plates are good for a While after my scheduled move so i've got plenty of time to figure it out lol

good to know about RMV appointments; i'm used to california being a hellscape for that and florida being a paradise. i'm assuming MA will be somewhere in the middle.

i drive a mazda and i intend to keep driving a mazda. subarus are great but if i'm gonna have a car with cylinders i want them all to be pointing up.

I'm def not a cars lover, beyond like "I prefer ugly ones" and I chose my subaru primarily because when I took it for a test drive I could "feel the road" and too many modern cars are too... floaty.

My subaru is a rougher ride and I genuinely love that.

in terms of aesthetic taste, my dream cars are like. a silver 1986 Toyota MR2 or that orangey-yellow 1979 Subaru Brat that looks like it belongs on the set of A New Hope

Wait, cars in Florida just... aren't inspected regularly? According to what I could find, they're only inspected once each time they get bought by someone new.

How does that work? Do cars in Florida just not ever slowly break down or decay, or is there some sort of super-strong reality-denial field/strange wind patterns that means that old cars with bad emissions somehow don't affect air quality?

I thought it was weird enough when I discovered that in NJ new cars get a five-year exemption from inspections.

part of it is that cars don't really rust here since it doesn't snow, part of it is libertarian mindset. hope this helps
