TOSE, the white-label studio that's anonymously made or done the mass gruntwork on literally thousands of games over the last 40+ years, just updated their forecasts for FY4 (ending August) from a projected ¥20M profit to a ¥450M loss, which would be their first down year in the past 20 years of public forecasts. They're putting it down to the cancellation of big contracts and the loss and/or delay in commencement of expected contract work; the article posits a certain degree of downturn as expected during the twilight and impending transition of certain hardware platforms (ie Switch), but to this degree...?

My main thought is if we assume they're a go-to studio for Japanese companies commissioning Switch ports (probably?), they maybe see that work drying up once the Switch 2 comes out, but even I would still reckon there's gotta be at least another year or two of that sort of stuff in the pipeline considering that PS4 releases aren't going anywhere anytime soon here. My initial guess was that maybe this was also a reaction to Nintendo purchasing Shiver Entertainment, but I took that acquisition to be geared more towards western developer outreach in the long term, so, yeah, who knows. 🤷
