there's huge illegal deforestation and the government is extremely in on it
it's a widespread and extremely fucked problem in australia. recently vicforests, the state owned forestry/logging enterprise was found to be illegally logging protected habitats on a regular basis. the agriculture sector around the country also practices illegal clear-felling of paddocks all the time and sees enforcement as infringing on their rights. that said, friendly jordies is a huge weird racist, and is tightly connected to the labor party, so watch out for weird right wing opinions and shit, particularly re: women, lgbt people, etc.
