the copper mine in my hometown is closing in a few years, its been announced. the copper smelter will operate until the end of the decade, and the lead/copper/zinc mine and smelter will continue to operate as normal, but. thats abt 1000 jobs gone in a sub 20000 person town. not sure what it means for my family yet - parents dont wanna move while grandparents are still there. town is increasingly uninhabitable due to climate change tho.

white stack (left): sulfur plant exhaust (scrubs sulfur from the copper smelter exhaust for use in fertiliser and to reduce pollution).
some headframes are visible behind the stacks, silhouetted against the sunset - these are the winches for elevators into the underground mines.
obviously i really dont like my hometown, its extremely isolating, its a massive ongoing ecological and public health disaster, and in a way i wish it were being closed entirely, but its horrible for the remote indigenous communities that rely on it for healthcare.
