One of the racial backgrounds you can pick from, and the one that Marika is described as descending from, are the Numen. It sounds like a racial cohort, but it's actually a word so obscure my spellchecker doesn't know it. A numen is a kind of deity, one who has been picked or anointed by other devine powers. Which fits quite well with Marika's back story, of course. I've also read that the Japanese term used for numen is something with a similar definition, of a kind of spirit or a god.

Derived from the word Nod (on implication that a numen is one given a nod or an approval from a higher power), the same root is found in innuendo (to nod or gesture at something indirectly).
