Continuing to play Helldivers 2 and boy it's got some highs and lows.

The highs:

  • It feels great to overcome a setback in this game and to extract in the middle of chaos, sort of like the feeling you get from Deep Rock Galactic, but far more chaotic (I've played modded Deep Rock on custom higher difficulties and that's the only comparison I can make, and I've only gotten like halfway up Helldiver 2's difficulty scale)

  • A unique sense of coop that I personally haven't gotten out of any other game. Some compare it to L4D series, but I never spent much time with those. In particular it's fun to feel rewarded for specializing your build into a role that your teammates rely upon without the game having rigid class systems like Deep Rock.

  • The controls and mechanics are difficult to get used to at first but I've come to really respect them. The realistic reloads and the terrain difficulties you encounter can be frustrating at first when you don't expect them, but it becomes a major part of the game once you get adapted. I took some bravery to not be more user friendly in that way.

The lows:

  • The difficulty is all over the place. This game is still wildly popular and more than half the playerbase outright avoid the Automaton planets. At some point you have to admit there's a good reason for it. This extends to certain mission types like Escort missions which, if they don't either completely remove them at some point or rework them, I'll be surprised. Escorts are fucked.

  • A lot of the loadout options are terrible. Once you get above difficulty 6 you can't play around with a laser cannon or other slow DPS things. If you don't elbow drop the enemies with a nuke literally from orbit, then you're going to get overrun even if you play it smart and avoid or disengage encounters frequently.

  • The coop functions need refining. A host shouldn't be able to kick people unilaterally. The map needs better ping options. And stuff like resupplies NEED to be shown on the map.

  • A couple control issues: Performing ANY alternative action when in the map or stratagem menu should cancel those menus. Dying to being locked into a menu is never fun.
