@ChrisStapley

99% of the texts and phone calls I receive are scams.
99% of my email inboxes are full of ads and scams.
99% of the mail in my real mailbox is ads and scams.
Most of my notifications on twitter/tumblr/twitch are from bots.
Every single app or site I use to watch TV or videos or listen to music or whatever floats a bunch of garbage to the top that I have to scroll past every single time I open it.
Scammers and bots and SEO bullshit and AI and ads and paywalls and a perfect storm of a thousand other shitty things has rendered most of the internet unusable.

None of that is here. The site was not designed from the ground up in the most actively hostile and annoying way possible. Everyone on here is a real person, and nobody's trying to scam me, and when someone's trying to sell something they're being Normal about it. It's so refreshing.

So truly, THANK YOU cohost for being one of the last remaining places where I don't constantly have to feel like I'm sifting through a landfill just to be allowed to use something for its intended purpose

in reply to @ChrisStapley's post:

very much depends on the tag you're looking at

there's definitely some tags here that are overwhelmingly flooded with advertising to the point where it's impossible to even find the non-ad posts

I'm curious which tags you're talking about -- that hasn't really been my experience at all

Like I've seen people post their commission sheets or link their patreon or ko-fi or promote a game they made if that's what you mean, but I don't really think of that as 'advertising' in the same sense as what I'm talking about above, and I'd hardly call it overwhelming. But maybe that's not what you're talking about

(And also, like you said, could be I'm just not looking at the right tags)

I would be more cautious. The bot people probably haven't tried hard yet. A lot of new social networks stay clear of it for a while.

Remember that actual nation states put effort into creating fake accounts these days.

I mean, me celebrating the current lack of (malicious) bots here isn't the same as me saying I'm letting my guard down. I'll exercise caution if and when it becomes clear that I need to.

That said, this website does have real, actual moderation, and also isn't all that popular (comparatively, anyway), so I feel like the odds of bots and fake accounts becoming an actual problem on here are pretty slim
