earlier today @staff posted this month's financial update which is the first one in quite a while. i believe every user should be at least somewhat informed about what's going on with the site they're using, but if you missed it for one reason or another, here's the general idea:
- the staff have unexpectedly lost contact with cohost's exclusive funder and the funds are drying up
- the user tipping system (collectively known as eggbux) they're been working on that should help fund the site is very much behind schedule
- in the current state, if they don't get another round of funding or another solution isn't found, they'll run out of money by early april, so we have approximately 3-4 weeks
- nothing is set in stone yet, but in the absolute worst case scenario that is cohost shutting down they'll provide every user with complete exports of their data and also their posts with a small static site generator
that sucks, what do i do?
at the time of this writing, the most straightforward way you can support cohost is by getting a cohost plus! subscription at $5/month (USD). if you wish to donate more, you can get multiple subscriptions! so if you have the spare money, i urge you to do that! unfortunately i myself am not in a position to do this, so the least i can do is tell you about it.
now something more personal
i've come to like this platform a lot since signing up last may. i may not post that often, but i really like the culture here and it feels like the only place where you're not shouting into the void when posting, which is a sentiment i've seen a lot of people here share. every interaction here feels more personal than on sites like twitter or tumblr (i already mentioned in the past how i check the pages of every person i see in my notifs out of genuine interest).
with all this in mind i honestly don't know where else i'd go if cohost actually goes down... i don't really have any other social media accounts (uh, do you count discord as one? probably not but that's been my main online presence for several years now). most likely it would be tumblr but i would NOT be happy about it ever since the ceo threw an embarassing temper tantrum like a 5 year old in the middle of the store
in any case, right now we wait with bated breath until staff come up with something that could help them keep the lights on, so keep an eye out for future updates! if you read this far, thanks
