One side effect of feed-based social media is that 80% of the time someone says something like "Some of you are doing X and it's ridiculous" I've never seen X in my life and just assume that it's rampant on the parts of the site that I'm not following. This accumulates until my impression of the website is almost entirely informed by vaguepost complaints and callouts in the same way that half of America thinks downtown Portland is a Mad Max wasteland that is actively on fire due to how mainstream news has portrayed the town over recent years.

Is that how people see Portland? It's mostly just trees, rain, and queer people in my experience
less so nowadays but especially in 2020 coverage of the protests gave people an image of a city filled with burning garbage and homeless that hasn't really faded away since in a lot of folks' minds
Ignoring that, y'know, all that footage was of a 2-3 block area in downtown and not even representative of the city on that day let alone in general
that's fair, around then LA was portrayed as a war zone too when there were really only a couple places where you ran into it and they were mostly known in advance
This post does the thing that it's referencing to itself, I think. I've never seen Portland portrayed that way.
