tonight's movie was The Slumber Party Massacre (1982)! and i loved it! as with many films of late, i had a lot of trepidation with this one. while the idea of a subversively feminist horror slasher parody sounded amazing, i was very worried it would be bad in a way that makes watching it a chore, like many other horror b-movies i've watched over the past few years. thankfully, this was not the case! The Slumber Party Massacre may be a spin on Halloween at it's core, but it's a damn good one that brings a lot of it's own things to the table. it's made by people who completely understand how to make a movie look good and stylish within a budget, which makes a lot more sense when you realize that Roger Corman produced this and likely guided it's production in his own legendarily efficient ways. this is also the debut film of it's director, Amy Holden Jones, who got her start in documentaries and editing before trying her hand at the director's chair. famously, she turned own editing ET to work on this! and honestly, we're better off for it. the movie is full of clever moments and little subversions that i won't spoil, except for saying this movie treats guys the way other horror films treat women. there are so many little moments in this movie that make it a joy to watch, like how there is always evidence in the scene of a grisly murder but it's always juuuuust outside the vision of our protagonists. the kills are also really good for an early slasher, with more left to the imagination then you would think, though still showing a little bit of that good ol gore we know and love. the storyline is pretty simple with 18 year old Trish Devereux (Michelle Michaels) wanting to throw a big slumber party with her friends while her parents are out of town. she also invites our other protagonist, Valerie Bates (Robin Stille), to the party but she refuses after overhearing a lot of shit talking from Trish's friends about her basketball skills. however, while all this is happening, a mass murderer (Michael Villella) has escaped from prison and is on the prowl. violent phallic hijinks ensue. this movie is a fantastic slasher that people who love slashers should not pass up! obv cw for nudity and violence but other then that it's totally fine! check it out!
