tonight's movie was the absurd spy-comedy The In-Laws from 1979! it was fucking great! peter falk and alan arkin are a fantastic duo, with peter falk playing Vince Ricardo the completely unhinged but still likeable in that Columbo way CIA agent. Alan Arkin, the poor schmuck, is the straight man as Sheldon Kornpett, an incredibly wound up dentist who gets caught up in a huge scheme to destroy the economy of the west (yay!) that both of them must stop (boo!) after meeting Vince for the first time before the wedding of his daughter to Vince's son. on top of this, they have to stop it by sunday, because that's when their children are getting married. the in-laws begins as a comedy that is very funny internally, if that makes sense. like you are chuckling in your head because "ah, that's a clever bit" but over time the movie starts making you laugh out loud, and by the end you are laughing so hard it's a bit difficult to say words. it's fantastic. don't watch the remake. also, it's still a comedy from the 70's so it's got a couple landmines. the chinese airplane pilots are a little much, as is Richard Libertini playing an insane (in the wacky way) dictator in a fake central american island country. i still highly recommend it if you can look past those things!
"You were involved in the Bay of Pigs?"
"Involved? That was my idea."
