tonight's movie was Inferno, the sequel to Suspira by Dario Argento! released in 1980 after a hellish filming cycle, it wasn't even given a chance in theaters and was dumped straight to video by 20th Century Fox after a management shake up. however, this is a goddamn sin, because inferno is fucking amazing. and when i say that, i don't mean it has the best story ever. far from it, in fact. i can only assume what some of the story was: a book about the Three Mothers (one of whom was the antagonist of Suspiria, Mater Suspiriam) holds knowledge to the whereabouts of....i think the other Mothers? and there are three keys, and the people who pursue those keys (and the people who help them) are being hunted by people sent out by one of the Mothers. that's kind of it. but oh my god, the fucking vibes. the vibes are immaculate. the lighting team who worked on this movie deserves the medal of honor, with the art director and set construction team not far behind. looking at this movie and experiencing it aurally and visually is just incredible. everything is so heightened, so operatic. it is less a horror film and more a surrealist film, with it's use of spaces specifically. every single shot of this movie is a goddamn delight. if you don't really care about story and just want to soak in some 80's italian horror surrealist vibes, inferno is the movie for you. if you want a better story, Suspira is right there (though let's be real that's not saying much). also, this movie has some heavy pet violence and was kind of upsetting so be wary of that.
