after finishing yakuza kiwami yesterday, tonight's movie was Takeshi Miike's Like A Dragon from 2007, the film adaptation of Yakuza (2005)! and i liked it! i also watched it with my dad, as always, and used him to judge how successful it was at telling the story of yakuza 05. i won't sum up the story here other then to say kazuma kiryu has been released from prison after ten years (it's not mentioned why in the movie) and is being pursued as a suspect in the theft of the Tojo Clan's ten billion yen. there are other unique subplots i enjoyed, such as the gun runner, but overall the movie successfully captures the feel of a yakuza story, with equal parts ridiculousness and serious sincerity. it's also very stylish in the way it adapts the way combat feels in those games to the silver screen, even down to including the heat auras. where the movie falters, however, is how it fails to explain the importance of certain characters to the overall story, with me having to explain story events that happen in the game to my dad for him to understand someone like Jingu, for example. i still really enjoyed it and shoutouts to Goro Nishitani for completely nailing the role of Goro Majima. also, boy is this movie hot and sweaty! check it out if you like yakuza or just asian action thrillers in general. not a whole lot to mention cw wise, other then blood and drinking, but that's yakuza, right? always check to make sure!
