Mortified realization I'll have to record a cover of unclearly remembered Australian rap from 1999
I guess I don't need to SHARE it with the world
But I probably will

It doesn't sound familiar, but that's the era I was deeply invested in Australian-made music - I've put the call out to my friends to see if it rings a bell with any of them.
In the meantime, have some Frenzal
Thank you for spreading the word, I really appreciate it. And I will always happily take some Frenzal, haha
Lmao I KNEW in my heart it would be punch in the face
Honestly, never heard it, cannot find a single hit from any line of lyrics presented in searching, and as an Australian local that has known more than a few Aussie musicians in my time, there's an unfortunate possibility I want to prepare you for:
It may very well be a local indie creation (regardless of quality, low or high), and that band might never have put the track out as an album online, let alone a successful one.
You may have been given a copy from a friend of a friend of a someone's fresh new indie track (at the time) that just never really made it, which might make it highly improbable to track down. :<
I DO hope you find it though, especially if it's the case of indie rarity.
I appreciate your taking the time to look! I fear you are probably right, but I'm hoping for a miracle. I've gotten lucky before, and managed to recover some songs from the memory hole, and I'm hoping that with help I might be able to do it one more time.
Haha last year I almost lost it trying to find a song by the band "Cartman", who gave themselves one of the most unsearchable names for the band AND album - "George". I was able to pull that one off though!! Probably because they did have a few EPs and one song got used on television though. That's in all likelihood a way bigger splash than "Energy" made.
If you haven't found this yet I think it's by Metabass 'n' Breath? Did a quick bit of digging and this sounds like a match for your lyrics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyU4Z7Rr8M4
THATS THE ONE OH MY GOD OH MY GOD THATS THE ONE I KNEW IT IN THREE NOTES
okay the bounty is YOURS my friend, send me an ask with your PayPal or kofi and I'll send it your way.
But tell me, how did you find this? I had NO luck searching for basically any permutation of the lyrics, not even the ones I was 100% on
Glad to help, but no bounty please!
I didn't search for the lyrics, but I did take a random stab using the song title in Discogs. I plugged in the song title, filtered down to 1990s Australian hip hop, and I just got (ultra) lucky on my first try.
You can see the exact search I used here: https://www.discogs.com/search/?type=all&track=energy&genre_exact=Hip+Hop&decade=1990&country_exact=Australia
And I do mean lucky! If it wasn't for that single YouTube upload, I would've arrived at the same dead end as everyone else. Thanks should really go to the both the Discogs contributors and the one person who actually uploaded the album.
I've given it a few listens now too, and it's a great track. I can see why it's stuck with you so long.
Thank you again. I teared up a bit when I was listening, because it really did take me so far back in time.
My friend back in the day had stellar taste - I'm pretty sure I liked every single thing that he recommended to me, and they've all stood the test of time.
For ages I felt like I was losing my mind, all the time I spent trying to find this - I started to wonder if I had somehow imagined it all. using discogs to search never crossed my mind. This BEYOND made my day.
