Every time I sew I have to figure out why the tension is fucked THIS time

It's a battle every single time

Didn't get it figured out in the end but still managed to teach my partner how to use the machine. They sewed me a cute grocery bag ;_;

I love teaching people how to make things. Training at work is rewarding too. I wish I could just teach classes in making stuff.

Yay for teaching people how to make things!

So: the Singer Heavy Duty and proper tensioning. I have one of the China era models and the bobbin case came from the factory incorrectly set. And not just a little-- we're talking bird's nests every time! Everyone assumed it couldn't be the bobbin case on a new machine, but it was!

The manual also warns you to never touch that little bobbin tension screw, but it's fine to do so. Especially if you're having tension problems!

The spring on my OEM bobbin case failed after a few years, too. I wound up getting a YEQUIN brand bobbin case from Amazon and the tension has been just fine ever since. The spring is very strong and the screw stays in place without superglue/nail polish.

Also, see if the manual is telling you to use class 15 or class 15j bobbins. Some runs of the manual have the wrong one listed, but 15j is the correct one. They both will work, but the 15j bobbins will work a little better.

I wonder if it's because I bought it refurbished and something is amiss! I know the bobbin winder isn't working correctly, I've got new tires for that on order already, so why not TWO things wrong lmao.

I'll check the bottom tension this weekend - it just seems WRONG that I should consistently have to run my upper tension at 5 1/2 or 6, more, just to do a simple straight stitch. Something that I feel SHOULD just work.

Also, thank you for the advice! I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know.
