For the most recent chapter, and this whole arc in general
Also spoilers for Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer by way of a comparison
Im kind of past the point where I'll accept "the kid had a lousy upbringing" as an even vaguely acceptable 'tragic origin' for a villain in stories like this. Like yeah ok you had shit parents who did wrong by you. That's not enough for a story where most of the main antagonists are teenage /murderers/. And murderer IS the fucking word. The villains in this aren't robbing banks or whatever, they're killing people, killing them in HORRIFIC ways! Lots of people! I don't buy even an ounce of that 'we can save the villains' talk in this. This isn't fucking Naruto where the bottom line is everyone is a shinobi so nobody's hands are clean so that 'we can be friends now' thing can fly.
This latest chapter where we see togas parents fuck up doesn't make me feel sympathetic for her at ALL because we've seen her murder like a bunch of different people by stabbing them with fucking KNIVES. I don't give a fuck if her parents didn't love her. That's not good enough!!
It kinda underscores that blood and death aside this is a comic for kids lmao. When the characters are kids and the audience is kids they have the motivations of kids.
I wanna compare how the main boy is treated by his grandfather in Hoshi no Samidare/Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer. He is literally held in fucking chains by the man who tries to force into him that all people in the world are worthless and wicked. And it /fucks him up/ in a real way, half of the story is him unraveling the harm that's been done to him. But I'll tell you what he doesn't do, even when he gets access to psychic powers - he doesn't start murdering people.
I don't know.
I haven't kept up with it for a few years but I think Vigilantes does more interesting things with the MHA setting.
I think after this arc, even if the story keeps going, I'm checking out. I'll see it through to there but after that I'm done. This Big Dumb Battle is exhausting and there are too many players to follow and I'm not feeling it.
