For "pen" the word it is using is "kugelschreiber" which is like, the word I would make up to make FUN of German
This is a word I actually knew tho. It's "stift". And pencil is bleistift. Short and easy. Why is it using a four syllable word for PEN?

B/c German isn't one language. Like most others, it depends on what dialect of German it's giving you. I read something recently about how younger German people in today's Germany are mostly speaking the standard dialect with only a touch of regional alteration, while the older the German, the rarer the dialect and the stranger the dialogue. So could just be a dialect thing?
My Oma spoke a dialect called Plattdeutsch, so I guess my mom's German has at least SOME of that in it, and 99% of my German exposure is just hearing her speak... hmm.
Itd be pretty funny if Duolingo was teaching some off the wall dialect.
