My new job at Massive Aerospace Manufacturing Company begins today. Orientation starts in two hours but before that we all line up and wait our turn to present the paper copies of our various Yes I'm Really Who I Say documents. So I get to spend an hour out in the dark before sunrise before I can even start the orientation lmao.

I'm nervous!!! The nerves finally caught up to me! I was chill for the last three months but OH SHIT WE ARE GOING IN

edit we started walking as I was writing that

This line is so long it wraps around two times and then winds way deeper into the building

I'm not DEAD last but I showed up five minutes before six and lots of people were WAY earlier

We have been informed that we are gonna be in line for a LONG while and if we want to just sit and kick it till it gets shorter that's fine. I'm grabbing a seat in the cafeteria. Whew.

Guess I'll read my German book till it gets shorter.

Edit

Turns out I'm in line beside one of my coworkers to be. Painters rise up

Now there are two lines?

I don't have the slightest fucking idea what's happening.

Edit

Shout-out to the lady eating an actual bowl of cereal in line. Where'd she get that

I'm so glad I ignored "business casual" on the dress code and wore my steeltoes. These things have THE BEST support for my feet. Thank God I've been continuously on my feet for the last three years too. This is nothing I can't handle.

Edit

After going through the trouble of getting my badge photo taken Wednesday I get to do it again today because they didn't forward it to the Seattle office. Thanks Large Aerospace Company

Edit

Fuck this company sure does develop weapons

Edit

This could have been an email

I'm watching someone read me PowerPoint slides

Edit

The child (18) sitting across from me is talking about how his friend lets him fly their Cessna and how his family vacations in Thailand

say you're rich without saying you're rich eh kiddo

Edit

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY CHILDREN WORKING HERE

No less than ten people have swung by this table to chat and they're ALL fresh out of highschool what the literal fuck!!

Edit

Vibe is MUCH different in the union meeting wow

Huge huge difference.

This feels a lot like the vibes I'm used to as a painter

Edit

I haven't been in a union since 2007. Please treat me better than IBEW or the scientist union did.

Edit

Oh man this unions bennies kick IBEW's ASS

Apprenticeships are available, IMMEDIATE pay raise to 34/hr, no risk of layoffs for apprentices. Shiiiit!!!

Edit

Waiting at the badge office to try and get my shit sorted again

I believe in you shaker!! You're gonna do great!!!!

One thing that helps me with nerves is to reframe it. I don't get nervous, I get excited. Once you rephrase it to "excitement" then it gets a lot easier :)

At the mention of Aerospace and Weapons, I thought I could have picked out the company, but... No. That's not even close to enough info, for aerospace manufacturing. Which is shocking and sad, in its own way.

Hope it's a good job tho!

it would be a real drag to compromise my values so badly and the job be shittier than the one I left

If nothing else tho they're paying for my schooling so I'm gonna take em for every dollar they've got.

Also like Im ONLY working on civilian aircraft I'm not touching any weapons here, so at least there's that

I'm very glad to hear this. I was very worried for you reading your last chost, but I'm glad you're figuring it out. Being wrong about the payscale after jumping ship is one of the worst ways to hit the ground, but I'm glad you're sorting it out. Now's not the best time to be having lean years!
