I wonder what art education looked like in Japan in the late sixties to mid seventies. There have to be books that were published then, right? Art books, how to books?

I was reflecting how a lot of the comic artists I like from back then draw a certain way and since I have nothing but time today I figured I would see what I could find out.

I figure it wouldn't necessarily be 'how to draw comics' because if you take for example Yoshihisa Tagami, his work has a strong 'design drawing' vibe. Like, architectural sketch style. If you know what I'm talking about you get it. There's very little biographical info about him on the English speaking web though. I don't know his background, only that he was born in 58 and his debut was somewhere in the 70s.

This would be much easier if I spoke Japanese. I don't even know where to begin searching.

in reply to @EarthShaker's post:

'how to draw' books are called 描き方 (egaki kata) idk if it'll be exactly what you're looking for but I remember there being Japanese how to draw books on the internet archive
The kanji in Yoshihisa Tagami's name is 田上喜久 but according to wikipedia it was usually spelt in hiragana as たがみ よしひさ
so you'll want to look for stuff with either of those

Hey, thanks a lot! That's super helpful. Im looking forward to seeing what egaki kata will reveal.

As far as Yoshihisa Tagami, even though the man himself is still a bit of a mystery, I have found a lot of his work for sale! Some even on places that ship to the US. Including things I've never heard of like Nervous Breakdown. I think I'm going to start collecting that one like I did with his work Karuizawa Syndrome, because boy fuckin howdy I always feel like I'm on the brink of a nervous breakdown. Seems appropriate!
