I just reread Daigo of Company M, or Megumi No Daigo. It's about a young man in 90s Japan who turns his life around, becomes a firefighter right out of highschool after spending his youth as a delinquent. As a firefighter he discovers it's terrifying, but he has a great instinct for saving people, even though it gets him hurt or in trouble.

I think this may be one of the best comics I've ever read. It's beautifully drawn, the action is tense and thrilling, sometimes terrifying, and it's just a great story about a person growing up. Daigo has to grapple with fear, then the adrenaline that comes with it, and discover who he's really doing this all for and what it means to take these risks. Over two years he really goes from being an irresponsible boy to a (somewhat less irresponsible) man.

I had a few volumes of this a few years after I got out of high school and tbh they really lit a fire under me to try out for fire service. It didn't work out, in the end - I got my EMS certifications and everything, took classes, got in shape... But I never ended up getting a job. I was too shy to fight for it I guess. And I would have needed corrective vision surgery anyway, my vision is way below the minimum requirements. But I tried!! I was inspired enough to do more than a year of difficult training and study!! It was an important part of my own process of turning my life around.

I don't know if any other work has ever moved me that way.

Anyway read Firefighter: Daigo of Company M, by Masahito Soda. There's a sequel series in publication now too, with an anime adaptation... It appears to be about his son, skipping about 20 years after the last chapter of the original series.
