My favorite drawing habit that I always forget about is one I learned about from acting. "Stage Business" is when an actor doesn't just deliver their lines and stand there but... You know, does something. A task. Folds a paper. Lights a cigarette. It's not necessarily scripted, and it can communicate so much about the character. When I'm firing in all cylinders I like to apply that to my drawings*, even just pinup drawings. Give a character something to do besides look pretty.

Take like the Hilda series by Duane Bryers. He's a fucking MASTER of business in illustrations. Because she's never just standing there looking pretty, she is ALWAYS doing something. She's acting. She's thinking, she's feeling, she's doing. You know things about this character. You get her. She has a personality. She comes alive.

That's the kind of thing I want for my art

*Remember when I posted drawings? I haven't had the energy to draw in so long. But I'm always THINKING about it.
