It is not remotely as cool as it sounds but it has its charms!. My team is responsible for priming spars and panels - the flat surfaces of the wings and the long "bones" that give them strength and structure. We use two different primers, one that is grey for exterior surfaces and a highlighter yellow-green one for interior surfaces which is based on hexavalent chromium pigment. It's /extremely/ carcinogenic but the interior surfaces are fuel tanks, basically, so it has to be resistant to that and chromate paint is pretty much the toughest shit around. We spray this inside giant climate controlled paint booths that become curing ovens to set the paint after spraying, at 160 degrees F.
The people who exterior finish paint have the exciting, stressful job. It's tough to get on that team but they tend to hire people who did things like custom RV paint jobs. Pays better, but if you fuck up /oh boy/.
