i've been thinking about this a lot lately, and i think you hit the nail on the head. Garfield's comics have at least made attempts to stay relevant, but hardly beyond basic modern references like Jon not knowing what a dial tone is (which was really trippy to me, as i was binging random Garfield comics and just saw him using a rotary phone two comics earlier LOL)
