I have also vaguely thought about trying it at some point. It seems fun! Maybe there is a cheap kit to try it and see how you like it? I’m a bit worried about how small the beads are but maybe they make big ones too that are easier to handle and place.
There's a lot of overlap between pixel art and perler beads imo, they kinda work like pixel art for CRTs but, y'know, physical
I have a custom perler keychain I got off etsy a couple of years ago and it's rad and I love it so yes
