if you do I recommend starting with the roleplay difficulty. It makes saves at settlements so you can learn the ropes and explore the systems instead of dying and restarting 800 times around Joppa. Tho the classic permadeath experience is also fun, if you don't mind the larger time investment.
Also pick up a ranged weapon even if you don't have any points in any ranged related shit; a bow, rocks, whatever.

Thank you for the advice! I cut my teeth on nethack and the like when I was younger, so hopefully I won’t feel like I have to evade permadeath for too long, heh…

it's not nearly as inscrutable as the classics like nethack, but still has a large amount of stuff to figure out and is generally whacky and chaotic. Have fun if you someday decide to dive in.
