happy friday! we know it’s been a bit since the last patch notes, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been getting a lot done in the last three weeks.

unfortunately we’re going to miss our goal of artist alley shipping by end of March. jae has been dealing with the worst-possible-timing head cold over the last week and has been working, as you might expect, slower than they’d like. things are getting close though, and assuming they make a recovery this weekend we expect to launch a pre-sale period by April 5 with listings going live by April 12. we’ll keep y’all posted on our plans.

colin is getting close to finishing the rewrite of the post editor to allow for inline attachments — just a few bugs left to squash — and we hope to start testing it by April 5. after it’s stable, he’ll be working on tipping full-time to get it over the line.

here’s what’s new:

  • addressed a couple safety concerns users raised with asks:
    • effective noon PDT March 29, you can no longer send asks containing embedded images, audio, or video; the concern raised here was that an embedded image in an ask could be used by a malicious sender to determine the IP address a particular user (the recipient) was browsing the site from, with no conscious interaction on their part beyond opening their ask inbox.
    • asks can no longer be sent without any text, as a measure to mitigate spam.
  • changed the anonymous ask UI to distinguish between logged-in anons (”Anonymous User”) and logged-out anon (”Anonymous Guest”)
    • if you allow anonymous asks at all, we generally recommend requiring them to be sent by logged in users (”require anon asks to be logged in?” checked in the project settings) unless you have a specific off-site audience you want to be able to ask you questions. our ability to moderate asks from senders who are not logged in is very limited.

  • changed how audio attachments are placed in a post in preparation for the new editor
  • minor copy change around the setting to automatically show 18+ posts
    • this was worded in an unclear way and became even less clear as we added surrounding settings. it should be better now. thanks to the users who pointed it out.

that’s all for this week! we’ll have more to share on artist alley early next week, and more to share on our financials in the coming weeks. until then, thanks as always for using cohost! :eggbug:

this week’s patch note title is brought to you by notion’s really silly and obnoxious AI upsells:

Ask AI: What's the function of eggbug?

glad to see the ask change. though now that you can't embed external images in asks, are there any plans to be able to upload images to cohost itself when writing asks, or are you going to keep them as text only?

But wait

Why a financial update in a few weeks if before the last update you were on a verge of being out of money by then

I know you guys got funding really last minute but it still is hard to have faith in site stability when that has happened twice now and with no word on how/where said funding came from (did the financial guy come back after going MIA?)

Well, no, it said that with everybody's generosity they were still running at a loss, but that they expect to have six months of funding from bridge funders and/or their original funder (not specified which), however crucially it said that no paperwork had been signed yet. So from our end all we know is that someone, somewhere, promised to give them some amount of money at some time, but it isn't secured yet.

I mean it could be secured now or almost secure but uh

The very almost-verge-of-death notice last time has me think it should be a top priority to address ASAP when they know! If they have another oh crap moment the site would basically veer into another lane again unless a backup plan worked

that seems extremely unlikely imo considering cohost plus adds almost no new features to the site for the user and the cost of maintaining a social media site is extremely high; it’d probably help but i seriously doubt this community buying subs is enough to fully pitch in and keep it afloat that long

Granted i did see a post of someone cutting into rent money to buy a cohost plus sub so maybe people did go ham

I mean, you can literally read the previous financial report to get the details. They got 700 new subscribers in just a couple days (+25% !!!), and the immediate cashflow from that was $20k after processing fees (looks like a lot of people bought a full year of subs). That, plus other unspecified funding offers, is what gives me the confidence in their estimate that they'll last at least 6 more months.

I'm sure the next financial update will clarify the situation (assuming it's not delayed indefinitely like previous ones).

Get well soon, Jae! I'm pleased to hear about these ask changes, that brings some peace of mind on both my main page and my askblog page (as slow-going as that is). Though, hopefully somewhere down the line actually embedding images within a post instead of having to do it with the [ ] ( ) method becomes a feature soon, some of my replies seem to be broken after using the cohost link from the embeds.
