I liked it for the most part! There was some neat lore there (though I haven't done Light Fingers so idk how much of it was already known about.) I am a firm believer in SA being a queer metaphor and so I like seeing the starved men get more of a place in London, though I do worry that the cultural exchange is coming off as a bit colonialist. You give the starved men clothes and they react like Dobbie getting a sock, then they vomit rubies into your hands while the assimilated lithographer stands by embarrassed. Hopefully they make a few changes to it. Otherwise, flying airships and growing plants was a lot of fun and I would love if they added a slightly more in-depth carousel for them, though I understand that it would be a lot of work and FBG doesn't seem super interested in doing so.
Speaking of FBG, considering that Estival is both a relatively new festival and quickly becoming "the big one" I think it's interesting to see how it's evolving over time in terms of mechanics and story. I know I was definitely surprised this year by the starved men "attacking." We all expected something to go wrong but I think most people assumed it would at least having something to do with horticulture, but they can only pull of that trick so many times and I am worried that it' going to be hard to keep something like this going over the years. It is neat watching them nail down the mechanics in real time; it looks like clue hunts from the GPE are a winner, and that people like the option to work on different things n the early levels of the festival like in the GCO. Boons made their first big appearance and seemed to work pretty well. FBG is also getting better at working out how long it takes players to accomplish certain goals (though I think they still underestimated how long the clue hunt would take lol.)
All that said there were definitely problems. I saw a lot of complaints that there was a lack of ambition tie-ins and considering how much of Light Fingers takes place on the roof I can definitely see why people would be upset. I know FBG has commented before that Power gets more tie ins because taking it is basically ASKING to have more of a say in what happens to London, but I think that's flawed logic to an extent. The masters had very little say in what happened to London during this event until the very end, but power still got the most tie-ins. I think that generally speaking everyone wants to see their ambitions play a role in their characters future, even if it's not on a massive scale.
Overall though yeah, I really enjoyed Estival and the items that came out of it! I'm looking forward to what they do next year, and seeing what the new FOTZ has in store for us.
