Any system that has a clear and obvious "dump stat" is an automatic failure. And since Intelligence is most useless stat in DnD5e I think someone needs to look over the core playloop.
Additionally, Dexterity increases chance to hit, raw damage output, and damage reduction through higher AC and Dex Saves. Better that Strength with its Attack focus and Constitution with its just giving more health(also Con Saves, but I've rolled more death saves than con saves).
When it comes to Mental Stats over half of Spellcasting uses Charisma and Perception is based off Wisdom(even so, taking proficiency in Perception negates low Wis).
Also, Perception is the best skill; objectively. I know players you specifically design characters just to have the highest Passive Perception possible. How often does "Animal Handling" come up?
I want to clear about 2 things:
-
Game design is hard, and I'm a novice.
-
I like DnD5e, but I see some flaws.
I don't know what the best solution to this is, but I still wanted to bring up some notes I've had for awhile. I'm a super heavy roleplayer. "Power Gaming" is incredibly annoying to me and "Power DMing" is worse. So playing a game where I'm asked for Perception every 5 hours(because combat) and never asked about anything related to my backstory is not the most fun I could have.
Worst of all is when I ask if my background would help in some regard(and get the plot going while revealing character development to the rest of the party) and get told no despite the subject being a part of my backstory. Seriously, I try to hand my DMs tools to advance the plot and we just end up waffling around for two hours. IDK, I'm just bitching at this point.
