I wrote an mlm romance in my "World of Demi-Humans: Freshmen Orientation" and I just finished the editing for the audiobook(available free on YouTube) here are some things I liked and disliked.
Things I liked:
-
It's a discovery story: I hate how so offer mlm couples are preestablished. She Ra, Owl House, and such, usually have "2 dad couples" which just feels like a cop-out to me. It's not the same as a developing relationship.
-
They are not perfect and are deeply flawed. William Decker is a moody edgy boy with daddy issues, self-doubt, and a hero complex, and Alphonse The Striker(yes, that is his name, wizards are very silly in my world) is an elitist jerk who is rather racist toward other demi types(namely mutants and other kins). With one having an ancient bloodline weapon ripping their mind, body, and soul apart and the other having a thousand-year-old legacy to uphold they come together to support one another.
-
Everyone is happy for them! Yes, of all the bigotry that exists in my world, bigotry against queerness (almost) doesn't happen. As a result of the deep trauma my world has gone through discrimination against queerness and queer people rarely ever happens. Even go so far as to the phrase "Everyone has two uncles" or "Everyone has a gay uncle" because that is just how things are. In fact, getting them together is the plot of the chapter they are featured in. Which brings me to-
Things I dislike(about my own writing):
- They are side characters. Yes, unfortunately, these two young lovers are but side characters to the main cast of Class J. But I hope one day to write the continuation of their story.
I'm sure I didn't do a perfect job and that there are flaws, but I have a vision, and like they say, if you want something to get done, sometimes you just have to do it yourself. (The chapter in question will be posted on January 29th.)
