its a pagan symbol used by various iron age cultures in europe, particularly associated with prechristian celtic cultures. its meaning is reconstructed within modern celtic or celtic adjacent paganism as referring to various triplets, such as the triad of gods, land spirits, and ancestors (and the illusary nature of those divisions), the three realms of land, sea, and sky, or the three cauldrons of poesy. they have also been interpreted as being a depiction of "entoptic phenomena", swirling hallucinations observed during trances or under the influence of entheogens.
