I feel like labial-velar consonants would seem a lot less "weird" if they were transcribed as, like, ⟨[kᵖ]⟩ instead of ⟨[k͡p]⟩. Especially when you get to things like prenasalised stops; ⟨ᵑ͡ᵐɡ͡b⟩ looks arcane, but imagine if it were ⟨ᵑɡᵇ⟩.
I read a grammar of a language once (Ìtón/Eton, Bantu, Cameroon) with words like ŋmŋméŋméb [ŋ͡m̀ŋ͡mə́ŋ͡mɜ́b̥] "thief" and it's just like, cmon. Too many tiebars. That looks terrifying. Why not ⟨[ŋ̀ᵐŋᵐə́ŋᵐɜ́b̥]⟩? It looks at least marginally more reasonable that way, and you can pick out the vowels much more easily
