I always have three Finder windows open and laid out in a 2x2 grid (with the window on the left taking up the whole column), filling most of my screen real estate on my primary monitor. This lets me rapidly deal with large volumes of files at a time, sorting by whatever criterion the moment calls for. On the rare occasions that I actually witness my desktop, it's always a jump scare because there's a ton of files and folders lying about!
Yeah i do this too now that i think about it. I do still have a bunch of shortcuts on my desktop but its mostly there so i remember that the things exist at all
