constantly amazed at how precisely zero large businesses even bother to glance at the plaintext version of their spam emails, and precisely all of them fuck up the plaintext mail merge 100% of the time. i don't think i've received a corporate email in ten years that didn't have gibberish in my mail client summary field.

my personal favorite is GOG sending me emails with full coupon codes that look like Windows serial keys IN THE SUBJECT LINE..

Recently I have started receiving broken spam emails where my phone's email client will generate a God awful massive notification like PLEASE COME BACK AND DO YOUR TAXES WITH US
yeah, the small number of devs who want to maintain plaintext copies are usually told to quit it. i like to build stuff in markdown with a nice template for the rendered HTML alternative, but as soon as you get into click-tracking, the markdown version gets ugly. HTML reader use is so high that mgmt thinks it's not worth the time, but my big thing is not to send multipart/alternative if they aren't actual friggin alternatives to each other! bc it can get used for the summary in list view and notifications! 😭
I used to be the person designing and coding emails like this for one specific large company and it had to go through at least 2 other people above me for tests before sending. They definitely didn’t have money for this, at one point they cut all our hours temporarily because they couldn’t pay us, so either they were just overcautious sticklers or bad at managing money, likely both. Anyway it super annoys me whenever I get emails with trash in them like this. I didn’t particularly enjoy spending every summer making Christmas ads but I still took 2 seconds to proof what I was doing, ugh.
