Nothing puts the lie to the idea that China is a communist country faster than reading contemporary Chinese romance novels. Massive income gaps, tycoon ceo male leads who spend money like water and drive maybachs (it's always maybachs specifically, no idea why), so much focus on the price of things. And like obviously novels, especially romance, are never a 1 to 1 with reality, and they hyper exaggerate the degree of wealth and privilege the mls have, but in order to function as escapist fantasy they have to have enough connection to the hypothetical reader's day to day life that she can self insert, and even at the most extreme degree of exaggeration they are not painting a pretty picture.
I had to stop reading one recently because the ml owned a winery and there was a scene of him firing all the staff so he could replace them with 'ai' (I think that might have been a mistranslation of automation but whatever). And I think I was supposed to find him intelligent and sexy but oh boy did that backfire
