As someone who went against your explicit advice and read this book, I feel like you really understated how boring most of it is. Especially the endless descriptions of who is standing where on the street or in the two houses after every single action.
Learning that it was adapted from a script goes a long way towards explaining that and the map at the beginning, I think: King was extremely concerned with blocking, apparently.
