i just watched a video of a restored Union Pacific Big Boy steam locomotive help push a stalled active cargo train which like
i think this is the first time a steam locomotive has assisted in actual freight service rather than heritage or excursion service since Sandaoling closed in 2022
they REALLY feel like animals. big old beast goes “WHOOF WHOOF” and slooowly spools up to power
i think a few preserved railroads do like, small job switching/shunting, and sometimes their steam power does it, like i heard that about strasburg specifically still serving a few industries along their line.
but there might be others, especially internationally, that i'm forgetting. and it still doesn't compare to the UP tapping 4014 to do that rescue while it was in the area
but also god yeah, it's a big fuckin creature. it lives and fuckin breathes, and it rules
it is worth remembering those!! still extremely cool
