If you ever get the chance to see one in person, they're incredible. Like, yeah, they're buried under a bunch of concrete blocks to keep radiation in, but just being near that kind of device is amazing, holy heck.
Every once and a while I wonder how hard it would be for me to make a working replica of the original hand-sized proof-of-concept cyclotron
I've never done the particle accelerator sort of cyclotron thing but have done ion cyclotron resonance Fourier transform mass spectrometry and that involved liquid helium and a 7 tesla magnet so it was still fun and cool
