Tags here are pretty much like Tumblr, although I don't think they follow that "only the first five tags are searchable" restriction. And welcome!
Because tags are here to help people find each other and not SEO(the irony) its best to use the most popular tags on a subject like #furry, #ArtistsofCohost and #The Cohost Global Feed
and also any tags people might want to silence like #kobold and #homeless(jape)
when you type in a tag the autofill is organized by popularity so #kobold might be more popular than #kobolds if it came up first.
but in general you already figured it out, just use it like tumblr and youll be fine
