In this session (from about a month ago now, I'm a bit behind on writing these) the players made their escape from the pirate ambush at Roseem's Bay in the belt and returned the freighter Kirglen safely to port. With their return came evidence that they're involved in something larger than a mere pirate attack, and a deal to get them a ship in exchange for help dealing with the hidden hand behind the attack. But first they will have to crawl into the guts of a disabled ship and do some pest control.

Calm, Te'tch, and Fink sailed in the V.S. Kirglen ore hauler on their short term contract, heading to the Roseem's Bay smelting and refining facility in the belt following a cruise where they were introduced to the crew and had to conduct an emergency EVA to recover lost cargo following an asteroid strike.

At Roseem's Bay they met the fourth PC, a human scout and pilot with some rough edges, who signed up to be the wheelman's mate on the Kirglen. After docking and being introduced they were left in charge of the ship while drones unloaded it and the officers and starboard crew shuttled down to the smelting facility for R&R and paperwork. Being lowest in crew seniority meant they got the boring shift, which this being a TTRPG, wouldn't remain boring for long.

We had to cut this session a little shorter than planned due to a player getting called away but we achieved the main objective, which was to run our first bit of starship combat and get us all familiar with how it works.

Finally getting around to writing up a post on the start of the campaign! I want to do one post per campaign session as something to share and also supplement my notes. I'll list things like a recap, what influenced me, music and references used, and anything else that might be relevant.

In this first session, 3 of the 4 PCs signed up for a single-voyage contract on the Kuvacara Voidship Company's V.S. Kirglen ore hauler. Doing so served both to get the PCs together (our fourth player couldn't make it so her character will join in session #2), give them the lay of the land from experienced NPC officers, and ease all of us players and DM into the setting and rules.

As this is the first session with a lot to introduce, this post will probably be longer than usual.

It's been three years, with the pandemic really derailing my TTRPGing (as I only like to play in person) but finally it looks like a campaign is coming together again! After the Years of Plague I decided against running what I tried starting in January 2020, Eclipse Phase. I've been forced to LARP a setting where a deadly and constantly mutating disease stalks humanity, so something lighter then!

Which I've decided will be Starfinder! I wanted something scifi since I've only ever run fantasy (D&D 3.5, Midnight, Iron Kingdoms) or contemporary horror (World of Darkness.) Finding a setting that was interesting AND a rules set that isn't overly complicated in scifi TTRPGs isn't easy. But this looks like it will do the trick. It's a very fantasy sort of scifi, being directly related via unexplained universe shenanigans to Pathfinder's world, and it features all the typical D&D-ish fantasy things like dwarves, drow, planes, etc. But the technology seems to be more the basis for the civilizations in it rather than just magic, with that balance different for each species.

Luckily I've found four local friends who want to play, so here's hoping it comes together and we get adventuring among the stars soon!
