I play games and make mods, I sometimes ramble and talk about life stuff.

Anyone here has had experiences with a lot of free video editors? Can you recommend any that work well for just fairly basic editing (cutting, text, screen transitions etc)?

I can't afford to pay $30 per month for an overpriced subscription, whether the program is good or not, and some companies like Adobe for example are kinda ehhh.

Here's some programs I've tried/heard about:

  • HitFilm Express: tried it for a bit, and I'm not sure if I dig the interface. Seems rather confusing to learn, and creating an account just to download the program is dumb. I've heard a lot of people praise this one, but idk if I wanna learn it or not.

  • Lightshot: heard rather mixed opinions about this one, was rather put off to use it for now. Apparently the free version is only limited???

  • DaVinci Resolve: I've heard pretty good things about this one. Not a fan of having to register an account, but I'm curious on what other people think about it.

  • VSDC Video Editor: I really like the interface in this one, it's easy to learn and intuitive. I'd love this program if not the fact it runs like utter shit. Although its functions are neat and the tool is pretty accessible, it's among the most poorly optimized software I've used. It literally lags to drag the window, and I'm using a pretty good computer.

Well and also I used Windows Movie Maker a very long time ago, during the XP/Vista times, but I don't think that one's gonna live up to today's standards.

If you have any good suggestions, I'd love to see them.

only one i've tried out of those is vsdc and i had a similar experience with it; have heard good things about davinci resolve though, and another one i've heard of is shotcut which might be worth looking into

Glad to know I'm not the only one who experienced massive lag in it. I hope the devs fix the performance, because I think it has potential to be a really good accessible tool for plenty of people, but it's just hard to use because of how laggy it can get

I've fiddled in DaVinci a little bit and it seems like a nicer alternative to HitFilm. It's less confusing to navigate, but it still takes a little while to figure it out

I've used Shotcut for only one video, but so far I quite like it. I was capable of doing everything I wanted to achieve with it, and it's easy enough to use without any prior tutorials, just some cursory "how to do X" Google searches.

Yea, simplicity and ease of use is something I prefer as well. I like to learn how to use software on my own, and if I have to look on tutorials for hours, then I often quickly lose interest
